titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to water-cooling radiators and other like heat-exchange apparatus |
abstract | 533,692. Soldering radiators. MORRIS MOTORS, LTD., DONO, G. E., and YOUNG, J. A. Nov. 15, 1939, No. 30132. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv) ] Heat exchange apparatus such as radiators for internal combustion engines and comprising gills and tubes one or both of which are made of aluminium or aluminium alloy have the aluminium surfaces at the joints first provided with a layer of oxide, then etched and then coated with a metal which will enable the joints to be made by tin or tin alloy solder. The gills are formed of sheets with flanged apertures, which fit on the tubes. The tubes or gills may be of copper or brass and the tubes may be of elliptical or like flattened cross-section. The aluminium portion may be coated with copper, nickel or iron, preferably electrolytically. The oxide may be produced by anodizing and the etching effected by a solution of potassium cyanide. According to the Provisional Specification the aluminium parts may be oxidized by dipping in a hot bath of sodium carbonate and sodium chromate and etching may be performed by oxalic acid. |
