titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to insulated electric conductors |
abstract | 531,273. Synthetic resinous insulating compositions. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 8, 1939, No. 19932. Convention date, July 8, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Metallic conductors are insulated with a composition comprising an admixture of a resinous condensation product of an aldehyde and a partially or completely hydrelysed polyvinyl ester with a compatible phenolaldehyde resin. Specified are :-aldehydesformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionic aldehyde, butyric aldehyde and benzaldehyde ; polyvinyl esters-acetate, propionate and butyrate ; phenol-aldehyde resins-condensation products of phenols, cresols or xylenols with formaldehyde in the presence of an organic alkaline catalyst, e.g. olamines or morphaline or inorganic alkaline catalysts, e.g. cyanides, hydroxides and carbonates of alkali metals. The composition is prepared by admixture in a solvent, e.g. cresol and solvent naphtha or a hydrocarbon solvent together with an alcohol. Examples are given of the preparations of a polyvinyl acetal by reacting polyvinyl acetate with formaldehyde in the presence of sulphuric acid ; phenol-aldehyde resins by condensing with aqueous formaldehyde (1) and (2) cresol in the presence of triethanolamine or morpholine and (3) phenol in presence of triethanolamine, and the preparation of compositions in a solvent mixture of cresol and solvent naphtha. The composition may be applied directly to the conductor or over a layer of ordinary enamel and produces a hard, flexible, tough abrasion and moisture-resistant coating resistant to oil and varnish. Specifications 15318/39, 460,347, and 529,690 are referred to. |
