titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to processes for the manufacture of saturated aliphatic bromides, and the products resulting therefrom
abstract 530,820. Aliphatic bromides. STEVENS, A. H. (Dow Chemical Co.). July 4, 1939, No. 19450. [Class 2 (iii)] Aliphatic bromides are made by heating a mixture of bromine, a saturated aliphatic alcohol, sulphur dioxide and water, the latter being present in the mixture in a quantity sufficient to dilute the sulphuric acid formed upon reaction of the mixture so as to prevent the acid from sulphating the alcohol. Alcohols specified are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl heptyl, octyl, nonyl and decyl alcohols, including secondary and tertiary forms. Di-, tii- and poly-hydroxy alcohols may also be fixed. In an example bromine is introduced through 7 from a container 8 into a still 9. Sulphur dioxide is introduced into the still through 11. The still carries a packed column 12 and methyl alcohol, diluted with water, is introduced through 14 from vessel 16. The top of the column is connected through 18 to a reflux 19. Uncondensed material passes through 21 to a condenser 22, from which a liquid fraction is run through 23 into a container 24 such as a steel condenser.
