titleOfInvention Method of manufacturing a detergent, wetting-out and emulsifying agent
abstract 530,415. Emulsions. WATANABE, E., and KAWAMURA. S. June 22, 1939, No. 18287. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Products stated to have wetting, cleansing, and emulsifying properties are prepared by condensing a phenol with a monohydric alcohol containing more than six carbon atoms in the molecule in the presence of a neutral salt of a strong mineral acid with an alkali metal or ammonium as a catalyst and sulphonating the product at a temperature below 25‹C. In examples (1) phenol is condensed with olein alcohol, an inert gas, e.g., carbon dioxide being passed through the reacting components and sodium chloride being used as catalyst; the product is sulphonated with sulphuric acid at below 15‹C. (2) cresol is condensed with cetyl alcohol, using ammonium sulphate as catalyst and the product sulphonated.
