titleOfInvention Improvements in the preparation of nitriles
abstract 529,854. Nitriles. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. June 9, 1939, No. 16923. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Nitriles of acrylic acids prepared by passing a cyanoalkyl ester or carbinol at a temperature between 350‹ and 600‹C. into contact with one of the following catalysts :-copper, copper salts, nickel, nickel salts, copper-iodine, nickeliodine, quartz-iodine, or iodine specified cyanoalkyl esters are cyanoethyl acetate, cyano-' isopropyl acetate, cyanobutyl acetate, cyano secondary butyl acetate, α-phenyl-α-cyanoethyl acetate, cyanoethyl formate, cyanobutyl propionate and cyano-isopropyl butyrate ; specified carbinols are cyanomethyl carbinol, #-cyano n-propyl alcohol and α-cyanomethylbutylcarbinol. By this method are obtained acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, α-phenylacrylonitrile &c. The yields of methacrylonitrile from isopropyl acetate, when the different catalysts are used, are given. Specification 424,885 is referred to. α-Phenyl-α-cyanoethyl acetate is made by acetylating the cyanohydrin of acetophenone.
