titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to liquid coating and impregnating compositions |
abstract | 528,202. Phenol-formaldehyde and molten products. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 29, 1939, No. 12883. Convention date, April 29, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] A liquid coating and impregnating composition is produced by reacting a phenol and an aqueous solution of an excess of formaldehyde, with ammonia or an amine as catalyst, at a temperature not exceeding 60‹C. for a period sufficient to effect separation of an oily layer which contains not more than 75 and not less than 60 per cent. by weight of potentiallyactive resin, withdrawing the oily layer and incorporating therewith a water-miscible organic solvent liquid in an amount effective to prevent separation of water. The molecular ratio of formaldehyde to phenol may be 1.05-1.5. Phenol includes cresol, xylenols and phenolic homologues and derivatives having at least one hydroxyl group. In place of formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or a compound yielding formaldehyde. Specified amines are hexamethylene tetramine, methylamine, ethylamine, ethylene diamine and triethylene tetramine. An example is given of the preparation of a resin varnish from cresol, formaldehyde and ammonia separation of water from the resin being effected by an addition of 5-20 per cent. of methyl or ethyl alcohol, acetone or of a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and benzene. The varnish may be used to impregnate fibrous material e.g. paper or cloth, for the production of laminated sheet material. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also an alternative process in which the reaction mixture is stabilized, without separation of resin, by adding an emulsifying agent, e.g. a gum or clay. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
