titleOfInvention Improvements in the polymerisation of butadienes in aqueous emulsion
abstract 523,130. Synthetic rubber. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Feb. 9, 1939, Nos. 4322 and 4323. Convention dates, Feb. 14, 1938, and April 22, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Synthetic rubber is produced by the polymerization of butadienes, including butadiene,. isoprene, dimethylbutadiene and other butadiene hydrocarbons in aqueous emulsion in the presence of an organic base containing a nitro group and an open-chain double bond between two carbon atoms or a carbon and a nitrogen atom. Other polymerizable compounds such as acrylic nitrile and styrene may be added. Suitable bases are Schiff's bases such as benzalp-nitraniline, p - nitrobenzal - p - nitroaniline, p-nitrobenzal thiosemicarbazone and cinnamalp-nitraniline. In examples, (1) butadiene is emulsified in aqueous sodium isopropylnaphthalene sulphonate and benzal-p-nitraniline with or without the addition of sodium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide ; (2) butadiene, styrene and cinnamal-p-nitraniline are emulsified in aqueous sodium di-isobutylnaphthalene sulphonate and cellulose methyl ether ; (3) butadiene and 5- nitro-2-styryl-benzimidazol are emulsified in aqueous sodium di-butylnaphthalene sulphonate.
