[Class 2 (iii)] Cation exchange resins are prepared by condensing mono- and/or poly-hydric phenols, phenol-carboxylic acids, or phenol-sulphonic acids with aliphatic or aromatic aldehydes containing at least one sulphonic or carboxylic group and with formaldehyde or its equivalent. In examples there are condensed together formaldehyde and (1), (7) resorcinol and sodium benzaldehyde - 2:4 - disulphonate ; (2) resorcinol and sodium benzaldehyde-2-sulphonate; (3) resorcinol, an #-sulphonic acid prepared from resorqinol, sodium sulphite, and formaldehyde, and sodium benzaldehyde-2:4-disulphonate ; (4) resorcinol and sodium benzaldehyde- 3-sulphonate ; (5) resorcinol, benzaldehyde-2- carboxylic acid ; (6) phenol and sodium benzaldehyde-2:4-disulphonate; (9) resorcinol and acetaldehyde-disulphonic acid. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of products prepared by condensing formaldehyde and (I) resorcinol and glyoxylic acid ; (II) p-phenol-sulphonic acid and benzaldehyde-2:4-disulphonic acid ; (III) 1:3:5- dioxybenzene-5-carboxyclic acid and benzaldehyde disulphonic acid ; (IV) 3-oxycinnamic acid and sodium benzaldehyde-2:4-disulphonate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of sodium benzaldehyde-3:5-disulphonate instead of the -2:4- disulphonate in Examples 6 and 7. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
