abstract 519,544. Cosmetic powders. CLAYTON, F. H., and BROCKLEHURST-WHISTON AMALGAMATED, Ltd. Sept. 23, 1938, No. 27841. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Cosmetic powders are prepared by dissolving silk fibres in an aqueous alkaline solution or suspension of a heavy metal hydroxide, e.g., nickel or copper, and precipitating the clarified solution by means of an acidic agent consisting of water or an organic liquid, containing an acid substance which can form with the heavy metal a derivative soluble in the medium, and separating and drying the precipitate. The solvent solution is conveniently a suspension of copper hydroxide in caustic soda and the precipitating agent ethyl alcohol containing acetic acid. The acidity of the solution is adjusted to lie on the acid side of the isoelectric point of silk fibroin, i.e., about pH 3.8. Colouring matter may be added to the solution of silk or to the precipitate while in the wet state.
