abstract | 518,717. Fire-extinguishing. DURSTON, G. H., HERMANN, W. M., LANG, M. R., and BLEYBERG, W. Aug. 19, 1938, Nos. 24471/38, 28343/38, 4583/39 and 16393/39. [Class 47 (ii)] A fire-extinguishing medium suitable for attacking fires of magnesium and the like, whether occurring in machines, piles of shavings, or incendiary bombs, consists of a mixture of a powdered, inert, substantially non- fusible, inorganic material, with a solid, semisolid, or liquid organic material which is capable of fusing to form an oxygen-excluding blanket over the fire. The inorganic material or filler .may be powdered slate, sand, aluminium or magnesium oxide,-graphite or china clay. Suitable solid organic materials are bitumen, higher fatty acids, alcohols, esters, or soaps, mineral or other waxes or fusible resins. Liquid or semiliquid organic materials which yield, with the fillers, pastes suitable for spreading over the. fire as a 'wide ribbon, are mineral oils, oleic or naphthenic acids, animal or vegetable oils such as cotton-seed oils, or greases or fats. Exemplary. compositions comprise equal parts of bitumen and slate powder with a smaller proportion of aluminium stearate. Compositions comprising bitumen or magnesium oleate are water-resistant, so that ordinary, fire-extinguishing media may be used against subsidiary fires after an incendiary bomb has been extinguished by the composition. The powdered -compositions may be mixed with burning metal shavings by shovelling. |
