titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the treatment of textile materials, films, foils and the like with etherifying agents
abstract 518,225. Treating textile materials and films with etherifying agents. DREYFUS, H. Aug. 16, 1938, Nos. 24093, 24094, and 30500. [Class 2 (ii)] Textile materials, films, foils, and like materials having a regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivative basis are subjected to the action of an etherifying agent, which, contains two or more etherifying atoms or radicles attached to a chain of at least 3 atoms, and which contains or forms by reaction not more than one hydroxyl group, under conditions such that at least two of the etherifying atoms or radicles react with the cellulose or cellulose derivative. The anti-creasing properties, resistance to ironing, and resistance to water of the materials treated are improved. The reagents may contain a radicle which itself can be etherified, e.g. hydroxyl radicle, .or an 'etherifying radicle which on reaction to form an ether yields a radicle which itself can be etherified, e.g. an epoxy radicle which yields a hydroxyl radicle. Preferably etherification is carried out so that the products are insoluble in aqueous alkalies and in common organic solvents. The etherifying agent may be a glycerin dichlorhydrin, s-dichlorpropane, #-#- bis-chlormethyl trimethylene glycol, a chlorhydrin of a sugar, s-dibromhydrin, epichlorhydrin, bis-(methylpyridinium chloride)-ethers of ethylene and trimethylene glycols, a propylidene or iso-propylidene dihalide, # #<1>-dichlorxylenes, bis-chlormethyl diphenyls, bis- (chlormethylphenyl) methanes, di - # - chlor - methylphenyl ethers, brominated # #<1>-dibromxylenes or xylenols, benzal chloride or bromide, benzotrichloride, 2.4-dichlorbenzal chloride, oxylylidine dichloride, or # # # #<1> #<1>-pentachlor-o-xylene. If the etherifying radicles have similar reactivities they may be caused to react simultaneously, but if they have different reactivities reaction of one may be succeeded by reaction of another as a result of a modification of the conditions. The materials treated may be of cotton, regenerated cellulose, or cellulose esters or ethers whether soluble or not in common organic solvents. Cellulose ester materials which have been subjected to partial saponification may be treated. The process is applicable to materials which have undergone considerable stretching. Etherification may be carried out in presence of organic or inorganic bases. Saponification of cellulose ester materials may be carried out simultaneously with the etherification. Water or organic liquids may be present as diluents. If desired, the etherifying agent may be used in vapour form. The reaction may be effected at elevated temperatures and pressures. The Provisional Specifications refer also to the treatment of cotton and other natural cellulose materials, and to the use of reagents other than those containing two or more etherifying radicles. Allyl chloride, crotonyl chloride, bis-/#-bromallyl ether, alpha/#- bis-brom-methyl ethylene, glycide, monochlorhydrins, monochlorpropyl alcohol, #-monochlortoluenes and cresols, are also, specified as etherifying agents. Specification 415,052 is referred to.
