abstract | 513,939. Indiarubber compositions. STEIN, J. Jan. 21, 1938, No. 2101. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 22, 1938.] [Class 70] Indiarubber compositions having antiseptic or therapeutic properties in contact with body emissions are prepared by incorporating before or after vulcanization an antiseptic material. If incorporated before vulcanization, a compound such as a salt or ester which is unacted upon by the vulcanizing ingredients may be used and the antiseptic subsequently liberated by the action of ammonia. Vulcanization is effected with sulphur chloride at a temperature of about 43 ‹C. Antiseptics which may be used are antiseptic nitrogen ring compounds and amines, substances having phenolic hydroxy groups, organo-metallic compounds, inorganic metallic compounds and, in particular, acriflavine, rivanol, oxazines, isoquinoline, 6-ethyl- 8 oxyquinoline, thiazines, phenol and carbethoxy derivatives, catechol, thymol, cresophan, pchlor-m-xylenol, phenyl mercuric nitrate or acetate, tolyl mercuric hydroxide, anilie mercuric hydroxide, organic salts of tin or bismuth, halogenated aromatic acids such as chlorbenzoic acid or chlorsalicylic acid, chlorinated benzenes, salicylic or benzoic acids, phenolic esters, metallic salts of phenols, chaulmoogra oil, and stannous or stannic hydroxide or chloride. The antiseptic substance may be formed in situ, e.g. aniline may be masticated into rubber and on vulcanization an antiseptic substance is formed by reaction of the aniline on the vulcanizing agent. A basic antiseptic such as oxyquinoline and an acid such as boric acid may be masticated together into rubber. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 514,598, and the formation of compounds in which the antiseptic is united to the rubber through an ether linkage, formed by treating rubber with monothiohydroquinone hydrohalide or substituted derivatives or heterocylic ring compounds having a thiohalide group. Mercaptans and polythio compounds may be incorporated and the compound formed during vulcanization with sulphur chloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
