titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of polyvinyl acetal resins
abstract 513,118. Polyvinyl acetal resins. KODAK, Ltd, (Eastman Kodak Co.). March 22, 1938, No. 8827. [Class 2 (iii)] Polyvinyl acetal resins are prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol, or a polyvinyl ester under saponifying conditions, with both a straight-chain and a branched-chain saturated. aliphatic aldehyde. Saponifying conditions may be produced by reacting in alcoholic medium, e.g. methyl, ethyl, or iso-propyl alcohol, with or without water or dioxane, and a catalyst, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, organic sulphonic or trichloracetic acids. Other acetalysis catalysts are zinc chloride and phosphoric acid. There are specified : polyvinyl estersacetate, chloracetate, propionate, butyrate ; straight-chain aldehydes-formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, paraldehyde, acetaldehyde diethyl acetal ; branched-chain aldehydes-iso-butyraldehyde, iso-valeraldehyde, iso-hexaldehyde, 2-ethylbutyraldehyde, 2-ethylhexaldehyde. The products may be plasticized with tributyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, diamyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, di- and tri-glycerol esters, e.g. acetins, propionins and butyrins, and monochlornaphtnalene. The resins may be used in moulding compositions or in sheets, e.g. for photographic films, interlayers for safety glass. Examples detail the preparation of polyvinyl acetaldehyde-isobutyraldehyde, -iso-valeraldehyde, -2-ethylbutyraldehyde, and -2-ethylhexaldehyde acetal resins.
