titleOfInvention Process for the production of synthetic resins
abstract 511,511. Phenol-aldehyde condensation products. ALBERT PRODUCTS, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1938, No. 5119. Convention date, March 8, 1937. Addition to 409,397. [Class 2 (iii)] Hardenable condensation products of phenols with aldehydes especially phenolalcohols or etherified phenolalcohols are treated at temperatures above 70‹C. with monokydric alcohols in the presence of catalysts that accelerate the hardening of phenol-formaldehyde condensates. Oxyfatty acids, fatty oils, resins, esters of dicarboxylic acids, fatty acids or resin acids are added during or after treatment. Specified catalysts include hydrohalogenic acids, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, ammonium chloride, aluminium chloride, acetyl chloride, benzoyl chloride, fatty acid and resinous acid chlorides, chloracetic acid, halogenated acids, alcohols and ketones, mineral acid esters of alcohols such as dibenzyl sulphate, halogenated hydrocarbons such as benzyl chloride, benzodichloride, benzylidene chloride, p-toluene sulphochloride and p-toluene sulphanilide. The excess of the etherifying agent used in preparing the etherified phenolalcohols may be used as the catalyst. In examples:- (1) a cresolformaldehyde condensate is heated with butanol in the presence of orthophosphoric acid and the product blended with ricinoleic acid ; (2) a crystalline condensate of dihydroxydiphenyldimethylmethane and formaldehyde is heated with amyl alcohol and phenol in the presence of acetyl chloride ; (3) a condensation product of formaldehyde and an acetone-phenol condensate (prepared according to Specification 261,522, [ Class 2 (iii)]), is heated with a mixture of butanol and hexanol in the presence of ptoluene sulphochloride and the product blended with Chinese wood oil ; (4) a condensation product of phenol and formaldehyde is etherifled with benzyl chloride and the etherified resin, containing an excess of benzyl chloride, is heated with amyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, octanol, wood oil and sardine oil. The product being diluted with solvent naphtha.
