titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of esters
abstract 507,778. Crotonic acid esters. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., and STAUDINGER, H. P. Jan. 1, 1938, No. 32. [Class 2 (iii)] Esters of crotonic acid with alipliatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic alcohols such a.s butyl alcohol, glycerol, glycol, cyclohexanol and benzyl alcohol, are made by reacting the aldehyde, alcohol and oxygen in the presence of a non-acidic oxidizing catalyst such as manganese crotonate or phosphate, or copper crotonate. The reaction may be effected by blowing oxygen or air into a mixture of the alcohol and crotonaldehyde, or the mixture may be passed downwardly through a packed tower in counter-current with hot air or oxygen, or oxygen or air and the aldehyde vapour may be passed into the alcohol. In an example crotonaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzene, manganese dioxide and phosphoric acid are heated in a flask and air is introduced, water being carried away by the benzene. Specifications 422,764 and 482,736 are referred to. The Provisional Specification includes the use of other similar unsaturated aldehydes.
