titleOfInvention Improvements in sulphonated terpenyl alkyl phenols
abstract 504,417. Making emulsions. AMERICAN CYANAMID & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. March 25, 1938, No. 9170. Convention date, June 26, 1937. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Sulphonated terpenyl alkylphenols, which are stated to have emulsifying properties are prepared: (a) by condensing a terpene with an alkylphenol containing at least one alkyl group of 3 or more carbon atoms and sulphonating the product: (b) by condensing a terpene with a sulphonated alkylphenol containing at least one alkyl group of 3 or more carbon atoms: or (c) by reacting an alkylchloride having at least one alkyl group of 3 or more carbon atoms with a sulphonated terpenyl phenol. In examples, propyl phenol, p-tert : amylphenol and p-tert: : butylphenol are condensed with alpha- or #-pinene and the products sulphonated and neutralized with sodium or ammonium hydroxide, or with bases such as triethanolamine, pyridine or an alkaloid. The products may be modified by reacting them with formaldehyde or by treating them with compounds containing hydroxy groups such as ricinoleic acid or castor oil. The properties of emulsifying or de-emulsifying mineral oils are thereby improved.
