titleOfInvention Manufacture of improved insecticidal compositions
abstract 503,490. Insecticidal compositions; acid amides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1937, No. 26875. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1936. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Insecticidal compositions comprise an amide of the formula R.CO.N<<R1>R11, in which R, R1 and R<11>signify hydrogen or aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radicles at least one R having more than seven carbon atoms, together with a known solid insecticidal substance, and together, if desired, with a,solvent or carrier. The amides are prepared by reacting acids; acid chlorides or esters with ammonia or amines ; thus, 10: 11-undecylenic acid isobutylamide is obtained by heating the acid, prepared by pyrolysis of castor oil, with isobutylamine in an autoclave, or by heating the acid chloride with isobutytamine in the presence of benzene and aqueous sodium hydroxide, or by autoclaving the ethyl ester with isobutylamine. Further amides mentioned are the isobutylamides of octanoic, decanoic, undecanoic, lauric, oleic, ethyl=n-heptylacetic, n-butyl-namylacetic and di-n-heptylacetic . acids and. of naphthenic acids, china wood oil acids and the acids obtained by the oxidation of petroleum hydrocarbons ; 10: 11-undecylenic acid isopropylamide ; the n-dodecylamides of isobutyric, lauric and formic acids, and lauric acid amide and dimethylamide. Mixtures of amides may be present, e.g. the isobutylamides of linseed, olive or. coconut oil acids or of the acids obtained by oxidizing the mixed alcohols of eight or more carbon atoms produced in the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon oxides; such amide mixtures are obtainable by heating the oil or fat with ammonia or amines at elevated pressure.. The following further components of the compositions are specified; as insecticidal substances, pyrethrum, derris, thiocyanates and phthalates ; ' as solvents, kerosene, gasoline and pine oil; as a carrier, talc. Thus, fly sprays are prepared by dissolving the ingredients in kerosene or other petroleum product with an amide concentration of 0'01 to 5'0 per cent, e.g. 10 : 11- undecylenic acid amide and pyrethrum dissolved in kerosene in a concentration of 0'025 and 0-5 per cent respectively. Specification 364,046 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes insecticidal compositions containing the amides mixed with a solvent or carrier and refers in this connection to kerosene solutions of 10 : 11-undecylenic acid amide; 10 : 11-undecylenic acid isobutylamide and the isobutylamides of coconut oil acids, and to a mixture of 10: 11- undecylenic acid amide with talc.. Mention is made of the isobutylamides of castor oil acids, capric acid and ethyl-n-butylacetic acid, and the n-butylamide of 10 : 11-undecylenic acid. This subject-,matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
