titleOfInvention Manufacture of esters
abstract 502,375. Making emulsions; lubricants. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt:- Ges.) Sept. 15, 1937, No. 25089. Sample furnished. [Classes 1 (i) and 91] [Also in Group IV] Benzole acids or phenoxyalkyl carboxylic acids, substituted in the nucleus by an aliphatic hydrocarbon radicle of at least four carbon atoms, or nuclear hydrogenation products of such acids, are esterified with mono- or poly-hydric hydroxy compounds, the components being so selected that the esters contain at least eighteen carbon atoms; the manufacture of esters from octylphenoxyacetic acid and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol or methyltetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is excluded. Specified acids are diisobutylbenzoic acid, isododecylbenzoic acid, p-isobutylphenoxyacetic acid and isododecylphenoxyacetic acid and their nuclear hydrogenation products, and also hexylbenzoic acid, hexylphenoxypropionic acid, hexylphenoxyacetic acid, and isooctylphenoxyacetic acid. Specified hydroxy compounds are (a) nuclearly alkylated phenols such as piopyl- and isopropyl-phenols, o- and p-nbutylphenols, isobutylphenols, particularly ptert.-butylphenol, p-tert.-butyl-o-cresol, arnyl-, hexyl- and heptylphenols, octylphenols, particularly p-di-isobutylphenol, nonyl-, decyl-, tetradecyl-, pentadecyl-, octodecyl-, eicosyl- and tetracosyl-phenols, and the substituted cyclohexanols obtainable from these phenols by hydrogenation; (b) correspondingly substituted naphthols or other polynuclear hydroxy compounds, or their hydrogenation products ; (c) cyclically-substituted isocyclic hydroxy compounds, such as benzylphenols and. hydroxydiphenyls and their hydrogenation products; (d) other hydroaromatic and also aliphatic alcohols, including di- or poly-hydric alcohols ; (e) the glycol, glycerol, polyglycol, polyglycerol or other hydroxyalkyl or polyoxyalkyl ethers of the specified hydroxy compounds. The esters are useful as lubricants for machinery and textile fibres; the esters containing polyglycol or polyglycerol ether radicles may also be used as dispersing agents. Examples aro given of the manufacture of esters from (1) isododecylcyclohexyloxyacetic acid chloride and ethylene glycol,' (2) hexylphenoxypropionic acid and dodecyl pentagiycol ether, (4) nhexylphenoxyacetic acid chloride and isohexylphenol, (5) isododecylphenoxyacetic acid chloride and ethylene glycol. Specification 496,135, [Group IV], is referred to. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5), of an ester prepared by heating sodium isooctylphenoxyacetate with dodecyl bromide.
