[C:lass lU0 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A process for making a washable printed surface on a piece of textile material, which is pliable and not easily destructible, for use as leaves of children's books, maps, &c. comprises first hiding the structure of the material by coating it with a substance such as a mixtureof kaolin and alumina, combined with a resin, rubber, nitrocellulose, or like mixture used in the manufacture of artificial leather, oilcloth., &c., then calendering the material, covering it with a layer of size or a caseincolour, printing a design thereon in one or more colours, coating the printed matter with an emulsion of natural or artificial resin, and finally coating the surface with varnish. The resin emulsion is allowed to penetrate the printed layer, and may comprise a mixture of copal in alcohol emulsified in ammonia and water; if desired, a small quantity of pliosphate of tricresyl may be added to the solution. The varnish preferably has a nitrocellulose base.
