titleOfInvention Improvements in the conversion of the acetylene linkage into an ethylene linkage
abstract Compounds containing acetylenic linkages are converted into compounds containing olefinic linkages by treatment with an aqueous suspension of zinc dust which has been activated by copper and cadmium. The activated zinc dust may be prepared by treating zinc dust simultaneously or in turn with solutions of copper and p cadmium salts, or a powdered alloy containing zinc, copper and cadmium, with or without other metals, may be used. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a solvent, e.g. an alcohol, and/or a dispersing agent, e.g. turkey red oil, and alkylnaphthalenesulphonic acid, a sulphonated higher alcohol, a reaction product of ethylene oxide and a higher alcohol, or a fatty acid tauride. In the examples: (1) zinc dust is treated in turn with solutions of copper sulphate and cadmium chloride, and an aqueous suspension of the product is shaken with acetylene, which is thus converted into ethylene; (2) an aqueous suspension of zinc dust activated as in example 1 is shaken with vinylacetylene, which is thus converted into butadiene; (3) as in example 2, except that turkey red oil is added to the suspension; (4) an aqueous suspension of zinc dust activated as in example 1 is warmed to 50 DEG C. with phenylacetylene, which is thus converted into styrene; (5) zinc dust activated as in example 1 is suspended in water with the aid of the sodium salt of oleic acid tauride, and vinylacetylene is passed through the suspension, whereby butadiene is obtained.
