titleOfInvention Improvements in the manufacture and production of carboxylic acid nitriles
abstract Aminopolynitriles are prepared in strongly acid media by reacting salts of ammonia or of aliphatic primary mono- or poly-amines or secondary polyamines, containing at least two hydrogen atoms directly attached to one, and in the case of polyamines, to one or more nitrogen atoms, the said amines being free from hydroxyalkyl groups, with aldehydes or ketones and with hydrocyanic acid produced in situ from an acid and a cyanide, in such molecular proportions that at least two nitrile radicles are introduced. The acid, e.g. sulphuric, phosphoric or hydrochloric may be present with the salt of the amine and the aldehyde or ketone in the reaction vessel and a cyanide solution added, or the acid and the cyanide may be added at the same time. Amines specified are methylamine, propylamine, dodecylamine, octodecylamine, oleylamine, ethylene diamine and triethylene tetramine. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, benzaldehyde, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, acetophenone and benzophenone are suitable aldehydes and ketones. In examples: (1) sodium cyanide reacts with a mixture of ammonium sulphate, formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid to give aminotriacetonitrile; (2) sodium cyanide reacts with ethylene diamine, formaldehyde and sulphuric acid to give ethylenediamine-tetraacetontrile; (3) sodium cyanide reacts with diethylene triamine, formaldehyde and sulphuric acid to give diethylenetriamine-penta-aceto-nitrile. The use of calcium and potassium cyanide and of formates and acetates of amines also is referred to. Specification 482,352 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to dimethylamine as a suitable amine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
