titleOfInvention | Improvements in the preparation of basic lead salts of trinitro-?-cresol |
abstract | Basic lead salts of trinitro-m-cresol suitable for use in fuzehead beads in blasting detonators are produced by reaction between a normal salt of the trinitro-m-cresol, a soluble lead salt and a free base, the soluble lead salt and the free base being added to the reaction zone progressively and at substantially the same aliquot rates. The solutions of lead salt and of free base may be run simultaneously into the solution of the normal trinitro-m-cresol salt or all three solutions may run simultaneously with agitation into a precipitating bath. Precipitation is preferably effected at a slightly raised temperature, e.g. 45 DEG C. The solutions should be dilute. Suitable bases are sodium or potassium hydroxide, ammonia, baryta or lime. The lead salt may be purified by washing successively with hot water, acetone and amyl acetate. Examples describe the preparation of: (1) and (2) the tribasic lead trinitro-m-cresylate, and (3), (4) the dibasic lead trinitro-m-cresylate. To make high tension fuzeheads for electric blasting detonators, blanks are dipped in a suspension of 73 per cent basic lead trinitro-m-cresylate and 27 per cent graphite in a 2 1/2 per cent solution of nitrocellulose, dried, dipped in a suspension of basic lead trinitro-m-cresylate alone in nitrocellulose solution and again dried. Customary dips into charcoal/potassium chlorate and collodion follow. |
