titleOfInvention Improvements in the manufacture and production of substances having tanning action
abstract Tanning-agents are obtained by the action of urea and formaldehyde on a sulphonated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof with other aromatic sulphonic acids. If the products are insoluble or insufficiently soluble in water, they are after-treated with aromatic sulphonic acids and formaldehyde or with the condensation products obtainable therefrom. An aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, e.g. salicylic or cresotinic acid, may be added before or during the reaction of the sulphonated hydrocarbon with urea and formaldehyde, or during the after-treatment of the products, and a further treatment with formaldehyde may follow the production of the products. Sulphonation products which may be reacted with urea and formaldehyde include naphthalene sulphonic acids, methylnaphthalene sulphonic acids, anthracene sulphonic acids, phenanthrene sulphonic acids, or mixtures of these with sulphonic acids of phenol, cresols and xylenols. Sulphonic acids which may be used in the after-treatment include phenol sulphonic acids and anthracene sulphonic acids or their mixtures or formaldehyde condensation products, and also mixtures of naphthalene sulphonic acids and anthracene sulphonic acids or their formaldehyde condensation products. In the examples: (1) a sulphonation product of naphthalene is treated with urea and formaldehyde, and the product is treated with sulphonated crude cresol and formaldehyde; (2) a sulphonation product of naphthalene is treated with urea and formaldehyde, and the product is treated with sulphonated anthracene and formaldehyde; (3) a sulphonation product of naphthalene is treated with urea, salicylic acid and formaldehyde, and the product is treated with sulphonated crude cresol and formaldehyde; (4) a sulphonation product of naphthalene is treated with urea, salicylic acid and formaldehyde, and the product is treated with sulphonated crude cresol, urea, salicylic acid and formaldehyde; (5) a sulphonation product of naphthalene is treated with urea, cresotinic acid, formaldehyde and sulphonated crude cresol, and the product is optionally treated with formaldehyde; (6) a sulphonation product of anthracene is treated with urea, salicylic acid and formaldehyde or (example 7) with urea, cresotinic acid and formaldehyde; (8) a mixture of sulphonated naphthalene and sulphonated crude cresol is treated with urea and formaldehyde; (9) a mixture of sulphonated naphthalene and sulphonated anthracene is treated with urea, salicylic acid and formaldehyde.
