titleOfInvention Printing cellulosic materials
abstract Printing.-White or coloured resist pattern effects on a coloured ground are produced upon cellulosic textile materials by applying to the material a printing paste containing a compound of the general formula <FORM:0491931/IV/1> (wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radicle containing at least 12 carbon atoms or is a radicle R1CO wherein R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radicle containing at least 11 carbon atoms, X is a non-carbon link, such as O, S, NH or substituted NH, <FORM:0491931/IV/2> is the residue of a tertiary aliphatic or heterocyclic base and Y is a monovalent anion residue of an acid such as hydrochloric, hydrobromic, nitric, sulphuric, p-toluenesulphonic or oxalic acid, the substituted NH group may be alkylimine, e.g. methylor ethyl-imino, acylimido, e.g. acetimido, aralkylimino, e.g. benzylimino, arylimino, e.g. anilino, or a carbamate residue such as N,CO.O,CH3 or N,CO,O,C2H3), heating the printed material, e.g. by steaming, preferably after drying it, and dyeing to produce a ground shade. The printing paste may contain an ice colour preparation capable of development by acid and the ground shade may be that of an azoic colour, a mordant dyestuff or a vat dyestuff, which may be applied in the form of the sulphuric ester of its leuco compound. The process is applicable to cotton and viscose and to cotton-wool, viscose-wool or viscose-natural silk mixtures. Specified compounds of the above general formula are cetyl-, octodecyl- and sec-dodecyloxymethylpyridinium chlorides, octodecyloxymethylquinolinium chloride, cetyloxymethylpyridinium acid oxalate, cetyloxymethylpyridinium pyridine sulphite, (cf. Specification 475,119), N-carbomethoxyheptadecylaminomethylpyridinium chloride, octodecyloxy methyltriethanolammonium chloride, cetyloxymethyltrimethylammonium chloride, stearylamidomethylpyridinium chloride, hydrogen sulphate or pyridine sulphite, (cf. Specification 472,389), N-methylstearamidomethyl- and stearanilidomethyl-pyridinium chlorides. They may be used, if desired, in conjunction with other resists such as gelatine, glue, size &c. In examples: (1) cotton fabric is printed with an aqueous paste containing stearylamidomethylpyridinium chloride, diacetone alcohol and starch-tragacanth thickening, dried, steamed, grounded with an aqueous solution containing Soledon jade green XS or Soledon orange R, sodium nitrite and tragacanth thickening, dried, passed through dilute sulphuric acid, washed, soaped and dried to obtain a white pattern on a green or orange ground; (2) cotton fabric, printed and steamed as in (1), is padded with an aqueous solution containing Caledon jade green or Caledon blue 3G, sodium formaldehydesulphoxylate, potassium carbonate and tragacanth thickening, dried, steamed, oxidized, soaped and dried to obtain a white pattern on a green or blue ground; (3) cotton fabric, printed and steamed as in (1) is padded with an aqueous solution containing the sodium salt of 1-sulphohydroxydimethylfuchsondicarboxylic acid, chromium acetate and tragacanth thickening, steamed, washed, soaped and dried to obtain a white pattern on a blue ground; (4) cotton fabric, printed and steamed as in (1) is padded with an aqueous solution containing a mixture of a diazoimino compound from diazotized 4-chloro-2-aminotoluene with the 21-toluidide of 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid or of a diazoimino compound from diazotized 4 - benzoylamino - 2 : 5 - diethoxyaniline with the anilide of 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, caustic soda and tragacanth thickening, dried, steamed in presence of acetic and formic acid vapours, washed, soaped and dried to obtain a white pattern on a red or blue ground; (5) cotton fabric is printed with an aqueous paste containing octodecyloxymethylpyridinium chloride, b -ethoxyethanol and starch-tragacanth thickening, dried, steamed, padded in an aqueous liquor containing Caledon jade green X200, caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite, exposed to the air, washed, chromed, soaped and dried to obtain a white pattern on a green ground; (6) cotton fabric is printed with an aqueous paste containing a diazoimino compound of diazotized 4 - chloro - 2 - aminotoluene, the 21-toluidide of 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, methylated spirit, caustic soda, stearamidomethylpyridinium chloride, diacetone alcohol and starch-tragacanth thickening, dried, steamed in presence of acetic and formic acid vapours, padded with an aqueous liquor containing Soledon jade green XS or the sulphuric ester of leuco-16 : 17-diethylene ether of dihydroxydibenzanthrone, (cf.
