titleOfInvention | Improvements in the manufacture of mixed ethers |
abstract | Mixed ethers are produced by heating an alcohol with water and sulphuric, phosphoric, arsenic, boric, or hydrochloric acid, and then slowly adding a mixture of this alcohol with another alcohol, the ether formed being distilled off and fractionated, any alcohol being returned to the reaction vessel. The invention <PICT:0491441/IV/1> is described with reference to the use of sulphuric acid; the strength of the acid should be low when tertiary alkyl groups are present, for instance less than 40 per cent for mixed tertiary butyl ethers, while for ethers whose most reactive group is a secondary alkyl radicle the strength should be about 60 per cent, and for ethers containing only normal alkyl groups 80 per cent, all these strengths being for atmospheric pressure at boiling temperatures but stronger acids may be used at lower temperatures and weaker acids at higher pressures and temperatures. For the production of tertiary butyl methyl ether there is charged into a reaction vessel 72 methyl alcohol, water, and sulphuric acid which is heated to 76 DEG C. and a mixture of methyl and tertiary butyl alcohols is added slowly, the vapours being led to a packed fractionating column 77 above a still 78 from which alcohol and water are returned to the reaction vessel 72. The ether is condensed at 84 and collects in a chamber 85 from which some is returned as reflux to the column 77. The composition of initial charges, proportions of added alcohols, and temperatures, yields &c. for the production of tertiary butyl methyl and tertiary butyl ethyl ethers are stated, phosphoric acid being used in the first case. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes particulars as above for the production of many other mixed ethers including normal, secondary and tertiary radicles. In a number of these the acid used is 66 B<\>ae. sulphuric acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
