titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to blasting compositions, and to the use thereof, particularly for the winning of coal
abstract 488,584. Blasting cartridges ; explosives. TAYLOR, J., HOLM, J. M., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 11, 1937, No. 861. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A gas-producing charge for use in safety blasting under conditions of positive confinement comprises a granulated mixture of urea nitrate or guanidine nitrate with gelatinized nitrocellulose in proportion sufficient to render the granulated mixture capable of propagating its own decomposition when locally initiated at ordinary pressure but insufficient to render the granulated mixture capable of burning with flame. The term " granulated mixture " is defined as a composition in which the ingredients of the mixture are homogeneously distributed throughout the individual granules. The proportion of the urea or guanidine nitrate preferably greatly exceeds that of the nitrocellulose. According to one example, the charge consists of 100 parts by weight of powdered guanidine nitrate with 20 parts nitrocellulose of 12 per cent nitrogen content in the form of a solution in 40 parts of acetone, whilst, according to another example, the charge consists of 100 parts urea nitrate, 20 parts nitrocellulose of 12 per cent nitrogen content and 10 parts guncotton of 13 per cent nitrogen content. The charge may be contained in a length of stout metal tubing serving as a lining for part of the borehole which is stemmed by sand and/or clay reinforced, if desired, by wedges, props, sprags, &c. Alternatively, the charge may be enclosed in a pressure-resistant cylinder fitted with a pressure-responsive venting device such as described in Specifications 431,935, 464,793, and 484,098. If desired, the cylinder may be provided with a discharge cap of the construction described in Specification 436,860. The initiating means for the charge may comprise electric powder fuzes, electric squibs or a non- detonating safety igniter constructed as described in Specifications 430,750 and 431,950. Specifications 21529/05, [Class 9], 430,258, and 454,091, also are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of solid incombustible nitrates or nitro-derivatives of non-metallic bases, including ammonium nitrate, dicyandiamidine nitrate, nitro-dicyandiamidine and nitroguanidine.
