titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of organic phosphorous compounds
abstract Phosphates of cyclic hydroxy compounds are prepared by treating the hydroxy compound with phosphorus pentachloride and water in a single operation. Cyclic hydroxy compounds mentioned are phenol, cresols, xylenols, resorcinol, a - and b -naphthols, cyclohexanol and methyl-cyclohexanol, and crude mixtures such as cresylic acid, and the products may be derived from the same or different hydroxy compounds. Preferably the water, additional to any that may be present in the starting material, is added in the vapour form in admixture with an inert gas such as air or carbon dioxide, and is introduced simultaneously with the phosphorus pentachloride into a reaction vessel containing the hydroxy compound. Thus, phosphorus pentachloride is fed at a measured rate into a reaction p vessel made of or lined with a corrosion-resisting material, whilst at the same time warm moist air from a humidifier is blown at a regulated rate into the bottom of the vessel charged with the hydroxy compound. To maintain the reaction temperature, which is preferably 75-80 DEG C., the reaction vessel is provided both with a jacket arranged for circulation of steam or water and with a reflux condenser, and a scrubber is used to remove hydrochloric acid from the gases issuing from the condenser. An example is given describing the preparation tricresyl phosphate. The products may be of purified by treatment with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal sulphide which may also contain alkali; the supernatant aqueous layer is decanted off and the phosphate remaining is then filtered. In addition, the products may be treated, preferably after the sulphide treatment, with nascent hydrogen, e.g. prepared from zinc and mineral acid or generated by electrolysis. The resulting phosphates are useful as plasticizers particularly for cellulose derivatives, as solvents for cellulose esters and resins, as absorbents in solvent recovery and air-conditioning, as fire- and water-proofing agents, as vehicles for grinding pigments, as transformer oil, as lubricants particularly in oxygen-compressors, as joint compounds for electric cables, and as softeners for rubber, chlorinated rubber and resins. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the preparation of the analogous thiophosphates by using hydrogen sulphide in place of water. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
