abstract 2 : 31 - Dimethyl - 8 - ethylthiathiazolino-carbocyanine iodide is prepared by condensation of 2 - methyl - 1 - propionylmethylenebenzthiazoline with 2-methylthiazoline methyl-p-toluenesulphonate, followed by conversion to the iodide. Similar condensations using (1) 1 - acetylmethylene - 2 - ethylbenzselenazoline and 2 - methylthiazoline ethyl p-toluenesulphonate, (2) 2 - acetylmethylene-1-ethyl - b - naphthathiazoline and 2 - methylthiazoline ethyl p-toluenesulphonate, (3) 1-methyl - 2 - propionyl - methylene - b - naphthathiazoline and 2 - methylthiazoline methyl p-toluenesulphonate, and (4) 1-acetylmethylene-4 - chloro - 2 - ethylbenzthiazoline and 2-methylthiazoline methyl p-toluenesulphonate, followed in each case by conversion to the corresponding iodide, give (1) 2 : 31-diethyl-8 - methylselenathiazolino - carbocyanine iodide, (2) 2 : 31 - diethyl - 8 - methyl - 3 : 4-benzthiathiazolinocarbocyanine iodide, (3) 2 : 31 - diethyl - 8 - methyl - 3 : 4 - benzthiathiazolinocarbocyanine iodide, and (4) 4-chloro-2 - ethyl - 21 : 8 - dimethylthiathiazolinocarbocyanine iodide. Propionic and acetic anhydrides are used as condensing agents. 1 - Acetylmethylene - 4 - chloro - 2 - ethylbenzthiazoline is prepared by the reaction of 4 - chloro - 1 - methylbenzthiazoline ethyl p-toluene-sulphonate with acetylchloride. 2 - Methylthiazoline methyl- and ethyl-p-toluenesulphonates are prepared by heating 2-methylthiazoline with methyl- or ethyl-p-toluenesulphonate.
