titleOfInvention | Improvements in incandescent electrodes for electric discharge tubes |
abstract | 484,548. Thermionic cathodes. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 31, 1937, No. 23823. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] An incandescent electrode more particularly for use in high-pressure, gas or vapour filled discharge tubes has its electron-emitting material composed of a vitreous material comprising one or more acid oxides whose melting point is over 2000‹ C. and one or more basic oxides, whose melting point is over 3000‹ C., the basic oxides being in excess. Silicon or aluminium oxides may be the acid oxides, and zirconium, beryllium lanthanum or thorium oxides the basic oxide. In one form 100 gms. of thorium oxide, 35 gms. of a mixture of barium and strontium carbonate, 165 cm<3>. of a 3 per cent solution of cellulose in amyl-acetate and 165 cm<3>. amyl-acetate are mixed and finely ground. To this is added 22 gms. of finely ground quartz and the mixture further ground. This paste is applied to a tungsten core and the electrode heated at about 2000‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere of a nitrogen-hydrogen mixture. Such an electrode is useful with a mercuryvapour filling at pressures above 5 atmospheres. |
