titleOfInvention An improved process for dyeing wood and wood products treated thereby
abstract 482,407. Colouring wood. FRUCHTL, jun., F., and FRUCHTL, A. April 6, 1937, No. 9704. [Class 140] [Also in Group XV] Sharply-defined, coloured patterns are produced upon wood by first soaking to the desired depth with an agent, e.g. an acid-free animal, vegetable or mineral oil, which is substantially immiscible with the staining fluid, and then applying the staining fluid at the desired areas, without pressure, the staining fluid, e.g. an aqueous solution of an aniline dyestuff, containing an added substance, e.g. alkali, which is capable of converting the soaking agent into a product which dissolves or suspends in the staining fluid. A denser wood is soaked with a more fluid oil, e.g. maple wood with oil of turpentine, lime wood with poppy seed oil. The staining fluid may be applied by brushing, spraying &c. In producing multi-coloured patterns by successive applications of stain, the stain is dried and the wood again soaked before applying further stain. In an example, maple wood is soaked for 1-2 minutes in paraffin oil, lightly wiped and then stained by applying, through a stencil, an aqueous dye stain containing 15 grains of caustic potash per litre.
