titleOfInvention A process for the extraction of heavy hydrocarbon oils with the aid of selective solvents
abstract Lubricating-oils are submitted to "intense extraction" with a polar selective solvent to produce an extract and a raffinate, whereupon the extract is treated to separate paraffinic hydrocarbons dissolved therein and these are added to the raffinate to form an improved lubricating oil. "Intense extraction" consists in effecting extraction under such conditions, (e.g. repeated extraction at increasing stages of temperature) that the ratio Viscosity E50 of the raffinate: Viscosity E50 of the extract, is greater than 1. Extracts so obtained, in addition to the usual non-paraffinic constituents, contain also low and medium molecular weight paraffins and high molecular aromatics which are difficult to remove. The latter cause "ring sticking" and are responsible for poor Couradson carbon value. The valuable medium molecular weight paraffins are recovered from the extract by distillation with a preferential solvent for aromatics if necessary, or by treating with a low molecular substance, e.g. propane under para-critical conditions as described in Specification 471,213. The "intense extraction" may be preceded by a normal extraction step, or series of steps to remove the bulk of the undesired constituents. Oils containing paraffin wax and asphalt may first be freed from these substances, but this is not essential, in which case the asphalt is removed with the extract and the final raffinate is dewaxed. Polar selective solvents specified are; liquid sulphur dioxide, furfurol, nitrobenzene, benzonitrile, aniline, chlor-aniline, crotonaldehyde, cresol, "chlorex" (Registered Trade Mark), or mixtures of these alone or together with diluents such as benzene, carbon disulphide, ether or carbon tetrachloride. In an example, a de-asphaltized oil residue is extrated at 90, 120, and 130 DEG C. with an equal amount of furfurol or nitrobenzene at each stage. A combined extract (67 per cent by vol.) of E50 6 and a raffinate (33 per cent) of E5015 are obtained \baR/E\be = 2,5. The extract is distilled in vacuo, leaving the high molecular aromatics as residue, and the paraffinic distillate (59 per cent by volume) is added to the raffinate. This is then dewaxed with benzene-acetone, and then finally treated with sulphuric acid and petroleum ether as diluent, caustic soda, and bleaching earth. The product had a Couradson Carbon Test of 0,44.
