titleOfInvention | Process for the manufacture of carbazole derivatives |
abstract | Carbazole derivatives are obtained by heatwith copper diarylamines of the formula RNHR<1>, in which R is an aryl radicle containing halogen in o-position to the NH group, and R<1> is a residue of a p-quinone containing at least two condensed nuclei and also containing halogen in o-position to the NH group. The reaction is preferably effected in a high-boiling solvent, e.g. nitrobenzene, and may be accelerated by addition of a tertiary amine, e.g. pyridine or quinoline. The products are useful as vat dyes or dye intermediates. Examples are given of the manufacture of carbazole derivatives from (1) 2-(4<1>-methyl-2<1> - bromoanilino) - 3 - chloro - a - naphthoquinone (obtained by brominating 2-(4<1>-methylanilino) - 3 - chloro - a - naphthoquinone); (2) 2 - (4<1> - chloro - 2<1> - bromoanilino) - 3 - chloro-a -naphthoquinone (obtained by brominating 2 - (4<1> - chloroanilino) - 3 - chloro - a -naphthoquinone); (3) 2 - (1<1> - bromo - 2<1>-naphthylamino) - 3 - chloro - a - naphthoquinone (obtained by brominating 2-b -naphthylamino-3-chloro-a -naphthoquinone); (4) 2-(2<1>-bromo-4<1> - phenylanilino) - 3 - chloro - a - naphthoquinone (obtained by brominating 2-4<1>-phenylanilino) - 3 - chloro - a - naphthoquinone); (5) 2<1> - bromo - 2<1> - fluorenonylamino) - 3-chloro-a -naphthoquinone (obtained by brominating the condensation product from 1 mol. each of 2 : 3-dichloro-a -naphthoquinone and 2-aminofluorenone); (6) the dibrominated condensation product from 2 mols of 2 : 3-dichloro-a -naphthoquinone and 1 mol. of benzidine; (7) 1-(2<1>-bromo-4<1>-methylanilino)-2-bromoanthraquinone (obtained by brominating 1 - (4<1> - methylanilino) - 2 - bromoanthraquinone); (8) 1-(1<1>-bromo-2<1>-naphthylamino) - 2 - bromoanthraquinone (obtained by brominating 1-b -naphthylamino-2-bromoanthraquinone). |
