titleOfInvention Improvements in filtering cartridges for gas-masks
abstract 475,087. Gas-mask filters. BOURCEY, E. F., and BOURCEY, R. I. June 18, 1937, Nos. 16992 and 16993. Convention dates, Feb. 1 and April 16. [Class 81 (ii)] A filter cartridge for gas-masks comprises active carbon 9 or like filter material, mounted above a filter material 19 for arsines, and arrangements whereby indrawn air emerges from the material 19 at the centre and is diffused horizontally by passing through the material 9. The cartridge comprises an upper part 1, and a lower part 2 having a central inlet orifice 14 and containing an inner cup 15 closed at the bottom. Cup 15 is supported by a flange 21 having perforations 28 and contains gauzes 18, 20, enclosing the material 19, and a central tube 12 spaced from the bottom of the cup by lugs 12a. A partition 24 held, with the flange 21, by the crimped joint 27 between parts 1 and 2, encloses the cup 15 and has a packed joint 25 with tube 12. Lugs 23 struck from flange 21 are turned back to hold gauze 20. Air entering at 14 strikes against the bottom of cup 15 whereby gross particles are deposited, passes around the cup, through holes 28, downwardly through material 19 and upwardly through tube 12. The part 1 contains a gauze 8 supporting the material 9 and held by a metal ring 10 engaging an annular depression 11 in the casing. The central part 8a of gauze 8 is not perforated or has fewer perforations than the remainder whereby the air issuing from tube 12 is diffused laterally and passed through the whole of the filter material. The part 3 contains a loose gauze 7 above material 9 and the upper part is formed as a screw-threaded neck 4 containing a rubber disc inhalation valve 6. The material 19 may comprise asbestos paper, asbestos leather, or asbestos board, which may be combined with esparto grass pulp. Specification 472,536 is referred to.
