titleOfInvention | The manufacture of water insoluble basic products in the presence of a substratum |
abstract | Water-soluble products obtainable by the action of ammonia or a primary or secondary amine on an alkylating agent containing in the molecule at least 2 alkylating groups are convertible, in presence of a fibre or other substratum, into water-insoluble polymerization products. The products have affinity for acids of high molecular weight, including acid dyestuffs, thus enabling the production of resins coloured with such dyestuffs and the fixation of the dyestuffs upon lake substrata and vegetable fibres. In examples: (1) cotton yarn is impregnated with a solution obtained by adding epichlorhydrin to an aqueous solution of ammonia at 20--25 DEG C. and is centrifuged, dried and heated for 1 hour at 120 DEG C.; the treated yarn may be dyed with acid dyestuffs; (2) artificial silk goods are impregnated with a solution obtained by adding a -dichlorhydrin to a solution of triethylenetriamine in aqueous sodium carbonate and further treated as in (1); the treated goods may be dyed with acid dyestuffs; if the goods are further treated with dimethyl sulphate in an organic solvent, dyeings fast to washing may be obtained in a neutral or alkaline bath; (3) artificial silk is impregnated with a solution obtained by adding epichlorhydrin to an aqueous solution of technical polyethylene polyamine from which the constituents boiling under 6mm. pressure up to 220 DEG C. have been removed, the impregnated material is dried, heated for 1 hour at 100 DEG C., washed, and introduced into an emulsion containing methyl p-toluenesulphonate and sodium carbonate, the emulsion being then slowly heated to 80--85 DEG C. and so maintained for 1 hour, whereupon the material is rinsed and hot soaped; the treatment imparts a soft smooth feel to the material; (4) artificial silk is similarly treated with replacement of the epichlorhydrin by ethylene bromide. |
