titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to processes for treatment of abietyl compounds and the products thereof
abstract Abietyl compounds are isomerized by bringing them into contact, preferably at an elevated temperature, with an hydrogenation catalyst. Abietyl compounds mentioned are abietic acid and its esters, e.g. the methyl, ethyl and glyceryl esters, as well as abietyl alcohol and esters thereof, such as abietyl acetate and abietyl abietate. The treatment is preferably effected in an atmosphere of inert gas at a temperature of 150--250 DEG C. The products, which are less unsaturated than the starting materials, have a higher melting point and improved colour. As catalysts, nickel, platinum, palladium and metal chromites are specified, and particularly a palladium catalyst prepared by absorbing a solution of palladium chloride and hydrochloric acid on granular alumina, treating first with formaldehyde solution and then with sodium hydroxide solution to precipitate palladium black and finally washing with dilute acetic acid and water. Figures are given to show the variation in physical and chemical characteristics of "I" rosin, abietic acid and methyl abietate resulting from the treatment, whilst the drawing shows graphically the different oxygen absorption shown over a period of days by treated and untreated "I" rosin. Nitrates of the methyl esters prepared from treated and untreated abietic acid possess identical melting points.ALSO:An hydrogenation catalyst, used for isomerizing abietyl compounds, is prepared by absorbing a solution of palladium chloride and hydrochloric acid on granular alumina, treating first with formaldehyde solution and then with sodium hydroxide solution to precipitate palladium black and finally washing with dilute acetic acid and water.
