titleOfInvention Manufacture of dyestuffs capable of being chromed and intermediate products therefor
abstract Intermediate products (phthalones) are made by condensing a hydroxytrimellitic acid or a derivative thereof with a heterocyclic nitrogen compound which contains a reactive methyl or methylene group, such as, a quinaldine, a 2-methylarylimidazole, a 2-methylaryloxazole, a 2-methylarylthiazole, a 2-methyleneindoline or a derivative thereof. Dyes capable of being chromed in substance or on the fibre are made by sulphonating the intermediates. Yellow shades are obtained on animal fibres. In the examples: (1) 5-hydroxybenzene-1 : 2 : 4-tricarboxylic acid anhydride or the free acid is heated with quinaldine in presence of zinc chloride, (2) the same anhydride is melted with 2-methylbenzimidazole, (3)-(8) the anhydride is condensed as in (1) with 8-hydroxyquinaldine, 2 : 4 : 5 : 7-tetramethylquinoline, 2 : 5 : 7-trimethylquinoline, 2 : 6-dimethylquinoline, b -naphthoquinaldine and 2-methyl-3 : 4-benzoquinoline. In each example details of the sulphonation of the intermediate product are given. 3-Hydroxybenzene-1 : 2 : 4-tricarboxylic acid (obtained by brominating pseudocumene-5-sulphonic acid in sulphuric acid, splitting off the sulpho group, oxidizing the product and substituting the bromine atom by the hydroxyl group) is also specified as starting material.
