titleOfInvention | Plant and process for the production of bisulphite solutions |
abstract | Solutions of calcium bisulphite are produced in apparatus comprising a "weak acid" tower 2 and a "strong acid" tower 3, Fig. 1, the lumps of limestone passing from the tower 2 being deflected laterally in the tower 3 so that sprinklers 19 may be inserted above the limestone in the lower tower. Sulphur dioxide is supplied to the towers from a pipe 14 and water to the tower 2 from sprinklers 9, whilst liquor collecting at the base of tower 3 is circulated by pump 17, pipe 18, and sprinklers 19 through the lower tower. By regulating the circulation by pump 17 a bisulphite solution of predetermined composition may be obtained, and by further regulating the quantity of sulphur dioxide supplied, complete absorption thereof in the tower 2 may be secured. Limestone used in the process may be replaced by dolomite. The SO2 content of the liquor may be increased by passing it through towers 25, 26, Fig. 1a, preferably filled with inert material, sulphur dioxide being supplied by pipe 31, and liquor collecting at the base of tower 26 being circulated by pump 33, pipes 34, and sprinklers 35 through <PICT:0469724/III/1> <PICT:0469724/III/2> the lower tower. Excess SO2 from the tower 25 may be fed to the towers 3, 2. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 may be worked separately from or together with that of Fig. 1a by suitable adjustment of the valves shown. |
