titleOfInvention | Manufacture of perchlorethylene |
abstract | Perchlorethylene is made by passing the vapours of tetrachlorethane with chlorine over a heated contact material such as fragments of porcelain or glass, porous materials such as charcoal or silica gel, or catalysts promoting addition of chlorine or splitting off of hydrogen chloride, e.g. chlorides of bivalent metals such as copper, advantageously together with porous materials. Using such catalysts temperatures of 150--300 DEG C. suffice; with contact materials alone 300--450 DEG C. is best. Increased or reduced pressures may be employed. In examples, active charcoal or bone chamber impregnated with 30 per cent of CuCl2 is used as contact material, temperature being 300--320 or 150 DEG C. respectively. |
