titleOfInvention | Process of preparing nitriles |
abstract | Nitriles of fatty acids having ten or more carbon atoms are heated under pressure to or above their decomposition temperature, whereby hydrocarbons and nitriles of fatty acids having fewer carbon atoms than the starting materials are obtained. The reaction temperature may be 400--800 DEG C., but is generally not much above 500 DEG C., and the pressure may be 150--1500, preferably 250--500 lb. per sq. inch; these conditions may correspond to reaction in the liquid phase or the vapour phase or both. A catalyst may be present, e.g. an oxide of aluminium, thorium, osmium or iron. Specified starting materials are stearonitrile, palmitonitrile, mixtures of higher aliphatic nitriles such as the nitriles of garbage grease acids or lard acids, and nitriles of unsaturated higher fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic, or linolenic acid. An example is given in which stearonitrile is treated to yield a product including capronitrile, enanthonitrile, pelargonitrile, caprylonitrile, lauronitrile, undecylonitrile, caprinitrile, unsaturated nitriles, and hydrocarbons; the product may be fractionated. The nitriles are useful in insecticidal compositions. Two forms of apparatus for use in the process are described, viz. (1) a discontinuous apparatus comprising an autoclave and a condenser, and (2) a continuous apparatus comprising a cracking coil, a condenser, and means for returning unchanged starting material to the coil. |
