titleOfInvention Improvements in the manufacture and production of agents suitable for improving lubricants
abstract Polymer products suitable as pour - point depressants and anti-oxidants for lubricants are obtained by treating with selective solvents the polymers obtained at temperatures above 50 DEG C. from esters, e.g. glycerides, of fatty acids containing eight or more carbon atoms and one or more double bonds and/or hydroxyl groups, by means of boron halides, e.g. boron fluoride. Selective solvents specified are alcohols, ketones, phenols, esters, aldehydes, chlorhydrins, ethers and chlorinated ethers, nitrogenous compounds, e.g. nitrobenzene, aniline, and nitriles, liquid sulphur dioxide, low-boiling hydrocarbons, e.g. propane and butane, and mixtures thereof. The esters to be polymerized may be those of acids from drying or semi-drying oils or synthetic acids of similar constitution. These may be polymerized undiluted or mixed with solvents such as benzine, illuminating oil, carbon tetrachloride. The boron fluoride may be used as a gas, as an addition compound, or in solution, e.g. in nitrobenzene. The high-molecular fractions, difficultly soluble in the above selective solvents, may be lightened in colour, e.g. by bleaching earths, they may be further treated with selective solvents, or with boron fluoride or they may be added direct to lubricants. The low-molecular fractions soluble in the selective solvents may be treated again with boron fluoride to obtain high-molecular products.ALSO:Polymerization products suitable as pour-point depressants and antioxidants for lubricants are obtained by subjecting polymers obtained at temperatures above 50 DEG C. from esters of fatty acids containing one or more double bonds and/or hydroxyl groups e.g. their glycerides by means of boron halides e.g. boron fluoride, to treatment with selective solvents, e.g. alcohols, ketones, phenols, esters, aldehydes, chlorhydrins, ethers and chlorinated ethers, nitrogenous compounds such as nitrobenzene, aniline and nitriles, liquid sulphur dioxide, low-boiling hydrocarbons such as propane and butane, and mixtures thereof. The esters to be polymerized may be those of acids from drying or semi-drying animal or vegetable oils, e.g. soya bean, cottonseed, castor, rapeseed, linseed, whale, and neat's-foot oils, or esters of synthetic fatty acids of similar constitution. These may be polymerized undiluted or mixed with solvents such as benzine, illuminating oil, carbon tetrachloride. The boron fluoride may be used as a gas, as an addition compound, or in solution, e.g. in nitrobenzene. The high-molecular fractions, difficulty soluble in the above selective solvents, may be lightened in colour, e.g. by bleaching earths, they may be further treated with selective solvents or with boron fluoride, or they may be added direct to lubricants. The low-molecular fractions, soluble in the selective solvents may be treated again with boron fluoride to obtain high-molecular products. In examples, (1) soya bean oil, (2) cottonseed oil are polymerized by boron fluoride and the polymer extracted with amyl alcohol.
