titleOfInvention Improved method and apparatus for the cleaning of heat interchanger elements and the like by pressure fluid
abstract 462,857. Soot blowers. ATKINS, G. R., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 11, 1935, No. 34410. [Class 99 (ii)] A soot blower, for cleaning the tubular &c. elements of a preheater &c. of the kind in which the elements rotate about a common axis, comprises a nozzle 13 which is transversed radially across the elements by the rotary motion of the preheater itself. The traversing movement of the nozzle is preferably effected by a cam 2 which is located on the preheater casing 1 and engages, once during each revolution of the latter, a roller 3 mounted on an arm 4 which is pivoted at 5 and is subjected to the pressure of a spring 6. The arm 4 carries a pawl 8 for engagement with a ratchet segment 7 which is connected through links 9, 10, 11 with a pipe 12 terminating in the nozzle 13, pressure fluid, e.g. compressed air, being supplied to the pipe 12 by a pipe 14 provided with a control valve 27. At the commencement of blowing, the ratchet 7 is against a stop 16 and the nozzle is at the periphery of the rotor. With each revolution of the preheater the cam 2 first rocks the arm 4 to cause the pawl 8 to ride over a tooth of the ratchet and then permits the spring 6 to rock the arm in the opposite direction, the pawl 8 actuating the ratchet and with it the nozzle tube 12 thus effecting a step-by-step movement of the nozzle towards the axis of the preheater. When the nozzle reaches the end of its travel the air supply is cut off by a weighted lever 21 which is released by a pin 18 carried, by a member 19 on the link 11 through a lever 20. Backward movement of the ratchet during operation of the blower is prevented by a second pawl 29, and during inoperative periods the roller 4 is shifted out of the path of the cam 2 and the pawls 8, 29 away from the ratchet 7 by a hand lever 26.
