titleOfInvention Method for the conversion of oils, fats and fatty acids into elaidic acid or derivatives thereof
abstract Oleic acid is converted into elaidic acid or an analogous isomeric change is effected in other unsaturated oils, fats, or fatty acids, e.g. arachis oil, containing one or more ethylene linkages, by bringing about the reaction at a temperature between 140 and 240 DEG C. in the presence of a small quantity of an activating agent consisting of selenium or tellurium or both or compounds thereof. The activating agent may be used in a pure or crude state, and may be applied in a finely divided condition to a carrier substance. The products may be used for edible purposes, or in soap making. In examples, crude olein is heated with crude metallic selenium, pure selenium red powder, crude tellurium or selenium dioxide, and pure oleic acid is heated with selenium grey powder, or hydrogen selenide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sept. 91 comprises also examples in which crude olein is heated with SeBr2 or SeSn. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specification 1,932,688.
