titleOfInvention Manufacture of 2:6-dimethylnaphthalene-8-sulphonic acid
abstract 2 : 6 - Dimethylnaphthalene-8-sulphonic acid is prepared by treating 2 : 6-dimethylnaphthalene with a sulphonating agent in the presence of an indifferent solvent at a temperature up to about 50 DEG C. Solvents specified are o-dichlorobenzene, trichlorobenzene, trichloroethylene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachlorethane, benzine and nitrobenzene. The product, which is a dyestuff intermediate, may be converted into 2 : 6-dimethyl-8-naphthol by melting with caustic alkali, or into the sulphochloride by treating its sodium salt with phosphorus pentachloride; from the sulphochloride, the sulphamide may be obtained by reaction with ammonia. Examples are given of the sulphonation with chlorosulphonic acid, sulphuric acid monohydrate, concentrated sulphuric acid and fuming sulphuric acid.
