titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of colloidal detergents
abstract Colloidal alkali metal silicates for use as detergents having normally elongated colloidal particles are reduced in size and rounded and roughened by subjecting a colloidal suspension to impact against a surface. As shown in Fig. 1, a heated, concentrated, colloidal suspension of an alkali metal silicate, e.g. that described in Specification 200,175, [Class 1 (iii)], is discharged at high velocity through a nozzle 7 against a plate &c. 8 arranged within a tank 9, the nozzle being above or below the surface of the liquid which is discharged through a pipe 10 and is solidified by means of a cooling drum 16 and belt 18 as described in Specification 214,344, [Class 91], Fig. 2, shows a modification in which the liquid is discharged through a series of tangential jets 28 in a tank 29 connected to an upper chamber 36. Baffles 37 prevent continuance of agitation in the chamber 36 and consist in breaking up larger particles. The liquid may be discharged by an overflow or recirculated through a pipe <PICT:0461013/III/1> <PICT:0461013/III/2> 38. Water or alkali solution may be added through a central passage 39. A further modification is described similar to a soap crutcher. Specification 399,355, [Class 1 (iii)], also is referred to.
