titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of ortho-hydroxycarboxylates and ortho-hydroxycarboxylic acids |
abstract | Aromatic o - hydroxycarboxylates and o-hydroxycarboxylic acids are prepared by passing carbon dioxide into a suspension of a dry, pulverized phenolate (cresolate or naphtholate) in an indifferent liquid medium having a boiling point above 100 DEG C., the phenolate being potassium phenolate alone or a mixture of potassium phenolate and sodium phenolate, or sodium phenolate mixed with a potassium salt other than the phenolate. The phenolates are prepared by mixing molecular quantities of alkali hydroxides and phenol diluted with an indifferent hydrocarbon and distilling till no more moisture comes over. Examples describe the use of sodium phenolate mixed with potassium phenolate, chloride, or carbonate in heavy benzol and of potassium o-cresolate and b -naphtholate in tetrahydronaphthalene. A small pressure may be used. The Provisional Specification refers to the intermediate production of the phenyl carbonate below 100 DEG C. Specification 384,619 is referred to. |
