titleOfInvention Thermoplastic rubber and method of making the same
abstract Thermoplastic rubber is made by mixing, e.g. by milling, with rubber an organic or inorganic compound which will react with water to produce an acid or acid-reacting compound, and a compound containing water chemically combined or otherwise associated, and heating to cause liberation of the water and thereby the formation of a reaction product or products which react with the rubber. In an example, 100 parts of rubber, 12 parts of phosphorus pentachloride and 17 parts of aluminium sulphate Al2(SO4)3.18H2O are mixed and heated at 160 DEG C. for 5-15 hours. Instead of phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorous trichloride or antimony pentachloride may be used. It is stated that the reaction products may be hydrochloric, sulphuric, chlorosulphonic, orthophosphoric or organic acids, or phosphorus oxychloride, aluminium phosphate or aluminium chloride.
