titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to cracking hydrocarbon oils |
abstract | Hydrocarbon oils are cracked by treating them at temperatures exceeding 400 DEG C., and under such pressures that at least part of the oil remains in the liquid phase, in the presence of small amount of a metal or an alloy and a halogen, halogen hydride or compound forming same under the reaction condition, the time of treatment being only a few minutes, e.g. 1--5 mins. The amounts of metals and halogen compounds used are less than 1 per cent of the initial oil used, e.g. ,02--0,2 per cent aluminium and ,07--0,7 per cent chlorine. The metals or alloys may be added in the form of compounds which are decomposed to metals under the reaction conditions and may be mixed with the oil or introduced during the reaction. Suitable metals are aluminium, magnesium, zinc, iron, nickel, molybdenum or their alloys and are preferably used in finely divided form, e.g. of metal powders used for the production of bronze colours. Metal carbonyls or organic compounds, e.g. zinc ethyl may be used. Halogen compounds specified are carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, chloroform, benzoyl chloride, benzyl chloride, ethylene dibromide or the corresponding iodine compounds. Two or more metals or halogen compounds may be employed together. The metal powders may be previously activated with iodine. Middle oil to which ,05 per cent aluminium bronze in suspension and 0,20 per cent carbon tetrachloride is added is forced under a pressure of 90--100 atmos. through a preheating coil to a reaction vessel maintained at 460 DEG C. in which the oil remains for three minutes. 50 per cent of a benzine boiling below 180 DEG C., and having an octane value of 71 is obtained. Specification 442,592 is referred to. |
