abstract | Azo dyes insoluble in water are made in substance, on the fibre or on a substratum by coupling arylamides of 5-hydroxyhydrindene-o-carboxylic acid with diazo compounds containing no group which renders the dyestuff soluble. Olive and brown shades are obtained. In examples dyes from the following components are described: the anilide, 2 : 4-dimethoxy-5-chloranilide, 2 : 5-dimethoxy-4-chloranilide, b -naphthylamide, and dianisidide of 5-hydroxy-hydrindene-o-carboxylic acid; p-nitroaniline, 1 - methoxy - 2 - benzoylamino - 4 - chloro - 5 - aminobenzene, 4- or 5-nitro-2-aminoanisole, 2-amino-4-chloro- or 4 : 4<1>-dichlorodiphenylether, dianisidine, 4- or 5-nitro-2-toluidine.
