titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of alkylene oxides
abstract Alkylene oxides are produced by hydrolysis of volatile fatty acid esters having a double bond attached to the same carbon atom as the carboxyl group in the presence of not substantially more than one molecule of water per molecule of ester. Vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate are homologous esters can be employed. Hydrolysis may be effected with the aid of ammonia or a strong organic base, e.g. dimethyl aniline, pyridine, trimethylamine or triethylamine, suitably with one molecule of base for each molecule of ester. With mono-or di-methylamine or ethylamine, aniline, and methyl aniline, for example, the process may be effected under anhydrous conditions. Reaction may be effected in the liquid or vapour phase at normal, reduced, or elevated pressure. Thus, vinyl acetate or other ester, water, and, e.g. pyridine may be heated under reflux so that only the alkylene oxide distils, or a vapourous mixture of the ester, water and volatile base may be passed through a tube containing pumice, kieselguhr or silica gel heated, e.g. to 150--350 DEG C. Diluent gases or vapours, which can be preheated, may be present. The alkylene oxide can be fractionally condensed, and the base and acid recovered from the salt formed as by the processes of Specifications 436,224 or 445,108. When an amide is produced, hydrolysis to the amine salt is first effected. In examples: (1) a mixture of about 5 parts each vinyl acetate and pyridine, and 1 part water, by weight, is heated to 100 DEG C. in a vessel fitted with a reflux condenser kept at, e.g. 20 DEG C.; (2) a mixture of about 5 parts vinyl acetate, 1 part ammonia is passed through a silicafilled tube at 245--250 DEG C. Acetamide and unchanged vinyl ester are condensed by cooling to, e.g. 20 DEG C. prior to condensing the ethylene oxide.
