titleOfInvention | Manufacture of substituted nitro- and amino-chrysenes |
abstract | Nitro- and amino-chrysenes are made by nitrating a chrysene substituted in the 2-position but containing no protected amino group, and, if desired, reducing the mono nitro-chrysenes so formed. The products are dyestuff intermediates, particularly for the azo, oxazine and anthraquinone series. In examples, 2-chlor-8-nitrochrysene, 2 - chlor - 8 - aminochrysene, 2-bromo-8-nitrochrysene, 2-bromo-8-aminochrysene, 2-cyano-8-nitrochrysene 2-cyano-8-amino-chrysene (made using excess of phenylhydrazine as reducing agent), 2-nitrochrysene-8-carboxylic acid, 2-aminochrysene-8-carboxylic acid, 2-acetoxy-8-nitro-chrysene, 2-hydroxy-8-amino-chrysene, 2-nitro-8-diethyl-sulphamidochrysene, 2 - amino - 8 - diethylsulphamidochrysene, 2 - nitro - chrysene - 8 - sulphonic acid, 2-amino-chrysene-8-sulphonic acid, 2-acetyl-8-nitro, 2-acetyl-8-amino-chrysene, 2-benzoyl-8-nitrochrysene, 2-benzoyl-8-aminochrysene, 8-nitro-chrysene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester, 8-nitrochrysene-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester, 2 : 8 - dinitrochrysene, 8 - nitro - 2 - methoxy - chrysene, 8 - amino - 2 - methoxy - chrysene, 8-nitro-2-ethoxychrysene and 8-amino-2-ethoxychrysene are made from the appropriate chrysenes. 2-Hydroxy-8-nitrochrysene is made by saponification of 2-acetoxy-8-nitro-chrysene. 2-Acetylamino-8-chlorochrysene is referred to. Chrysenes substituted by alkyl and sulphone groups may also be used as starting materials. In the Provisional Specification is described the formation of 2 - acetylamino - 8 - nitrochrysene from 2-acetylamino chrysene, its reduction to 2-acetylamino-8-aminochrysene, and the saponification of the latter to give 2 : 8-diaminochrysene. 2-Chloro- and 2-bromo-chrysene are made by treating chrysene with sulphuryl chloride or bromine in nitro-benzene. 2 - Cyanochrysene and chrysene - 2 - carboxylic acid.--2-Cyanochrysene is made by melting cuprous cyanide with 2-chlorochrysene, and on saponification yields chrysene-2-carboxylic acid. 2 - Hydroxy- and 2 - acetoxychrysene.--2-Acetoxychrysene is obtained by acetylating 2 - hydroxychrysene, obtainable by melting chrysene-2-sulphonic acid with potash. Chrysene-2-sulphochloride and sulphonamides.--Chrysene - 2 - sulphochloride is made from chrysene - 2 - sulphonic acid and phosphorus pentachloride and yields with diethylamine, ammonia, methylamine, dimethylamine, mono or di-ethanolamine or butylamine the corresponding amides. Chrysene-2-sulphonic acid is made from chrysene and chlor-sulphonic acid in tetrachlorethane. 2-Acetyl-chrysene and 2-benzoyl-chrysene are made by condensing acetyl chloride or benzoyl chloride with chrysene in presence of aluminium chloride. Chrysene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester and ethyl ester are made by esterification of the acid. 2-Methoxy- and ethoxy-chrysenes are obtained by treating 2-hydroxy-chrysene with dimethyl or diethyl sulphate. Dyes.--On treating 2 - hydroxy - 8 - aminochrysene with pyrolusite and sulphuric acid, a coloured quinonoid compound is formed. |
